Study Task 10- Presentation Techniques

What I learnt:

  • try to memorise your speech so you don't have to rely too much notes (ideally, not essential)
  • content consists of head content (who, what, when, where, how) and heart content (values, beliefs, purpose)
  • Structure:
  • bookending: start and finish with a similar thing/things that relate e.g. quote. Summing up what you wanted to say
  • sum up the overall theme of the speech
  • "callbacks"
  • create an open loop, creates intrigue and makes people continue listening
  • maybe start by passing something round? visual aids and holding/touching something keep audience engaged
  • Power of 3:
  • e.g. friends, Romans, countrymen
  • try and list important things in threes
  • more effective and makes people remember them
  • lists are good!
  • you can even structure your speech in threes:
  • -development -transformation -future
  • this makes it easier to follow and easier to anticipate how much longer of the speech there is to go
  • think about the bones of your presentation, how many parts is there?
  • speed, tone and pitch:
  • volume is important, don't mumble
  • emphasise questions or important words
  • make small pauses for effect, this gives the audience time to think and is better than using crutch words
  • try to look people in the eyes, makes them feel important and more likely to listen and be involved with your presentation
  • think about unconscious tics and movements
  • root yourself to the spot for most of it
  • 8-12 slides?
  • stand to the side so your not in the way, but not too far
  • don't rush through it
  • don't move around too much
  • the better you plan your words, the less time there is to 'um' and 'uh'

How I will take this forward into my presentation:

  • I expect I will speak mainly with heart content as that is what feels natural to me and is what I think people most engage with, but I will use head content as the bones
  • I will have a clear structure both so I can memorise the words more easily and so the audience can follow along
  • most likely I will begin with how this year have gone following on from last year, go onto what I've learnt and how I found everything, then finally outline what I intend to do in my final year
  • I will plan my speech out first, making sure to include all the points I most want to cover, I will then perform it out loud and time it, cutting it down to the right time afterwards
  • I will write an accurate script, and attempt to memorise it as best I can, as I realise I can ramble a lot and this makes me feel more nervous as I get lost in what I'm trying to say
  • I will attempt to stay more still than I did last time, as I know that my erratic arm movement make me look nervous
  • I will try to use my visual aids to make my presentation more engaging and memorable, I really have found a sense of myself in my work this year and I want to try and get that across
